Remembering the Now

This week, I tried to remember my daughters growing up. When they were 2 and 6, when they 4 and 8, when they were 6 and 10. Of course, there was the usual highlights, the trips, the birthdays, the holidays. The big moments that spark and lead the way.

But the little moments, the moments that secure the walls of our past, a lot of these were forgotten or lost. Maybe it was tucking the covers in to make them just right, or the butterfly kisses, or the runs up into the treehouse or splashes in the pool. Walks to the barn and dogs in the mud, I wish I’d remembered more. That’s the wisp of nostalgia and half memories right there. Games played in the twilight.

One day, if I could just go back to one day. That would be fun.

But there is today. There is the right now I can remember. The next time I pass myself in the mirror, or see my daughters, or hold my wife’s hand, that’s a small moment that can be made big in the remembering. That’s a small moment in the present refracting more than enough light. That’s where change can happen.

If we want to collaborate with the future, there’s no time like the present.
