The 3 Words of 2021

As we cut the tethers to the strangest year, I’ve decided to focus on three words for 2021. These are intentions I plan on revisiting frequently as a measure: maybe they’ll change if better words come along, maybe I’ll stray and need reminding, maybe they’ll fit exactly:

  • Deepen

  • Sharpen

  • Share

Deepen: I skit along the surface of a thousand things. That is is my natural state. What I’ll try to do more is stick my hands into the few things that matter. This is about being more intentional around family, about being more charitable around community, about being more present in my work. One way I’m doing this is by finding the hour - an exercise to free up one hour a day to go deeper. In 2021, this hour starts with writing.

Sharpen: It’s time to own the outcome. Move the theory of the thousand self-help books I’ve read (on business, on life) from theory into practice. Better and clearer thinking is needed as a business owner and entrepreneur, as a lover and father, as a man. Going from good to great will require the sharpening of the blade to reveal what matters most.

Share: Generosity is more important than ever. It was the generosity of others that got me through 2020, and my goal is return that favor in 2021. By asking people how I can help more. Then listening for the answer. By doing, by sharing, by engaging more in community - and with you.

Radical Optimism is knowing we can make change for the better moving forward. It will happen. These are the three words I’m bringing to the table in 2021 to get me there. I’m prepping my journal for the New Year, and these will stare at me front and center each and every day.

What happens next? I look forward to finding out.

Tell me your three words. And Happy New Year.
